Blacksmith of the Forest
You have taken a hike through an alpine forest in late October, but unfortunately have lost the trail and wandered into the thick of trees. The sunlight is fading from the sky, shadows creep to overtake all in their grasp. As cold wind starts cutting through the evergreen bows, you begin to heavily regret your choice to undertake this adventure. Wolves howl in the distance, but among their din is another noise. A familiar noise, but you can't place it; A rhythmic ringing of metal. You decide to follow the strange sound towards its origin. The smell of smoke becomes stronger as the noise grows ever louder. You come upon a cabin of sorts and carefully you make your way around to see a man standing in front of a roaring fire in a stone chimney. He works the bellows and the flames rise higher, you can feel the heat from it sink into your bones from afar, melting away the cold that had claimed them. You feel called to the fire, seeming to draw you in closer. An anvil stands off to the right of him, with many hammers and tools carefully placed in racks around. You realize that this man must be a blacksmith. As if hearing his profession be called out, he draws his work from the forge and turns, the metal rod glows with hellfire as he spins around and grabs a hammer off the anvil. Bang, bang, bang. The hammer falls with might and precision, the anvil sings with joy. Bang, bang, bang. Sparks fly and fall to the ground as their life was siphoned from them by the air itself. The work cooled as it was hit, losing is glow like the sparks. He turned to place it back into the forge, when he finally noticed your presence. The blacksmith stops mid stride, a tense second passes with not a move made. He is the first one to break the awkward moment with a smile. The man invites you further inside towards the forge, noticing the shaking you yourself didn't realize you were doing. You move closer inside as he works the bellows. Heat washes over you once again and fully removes the ice in your veins. The Blacksmith surmises that you are lost and offers you to stay the night. You agree, not having much choice on the matter. He gestures to a stool off to the side and you gladly accept. You sit and rest your back against the wall, relishing the chance to get off your feet. The smith beams a warm smile at you before continuing his work, adding that he will show you the way out of the forest in the morning. You thank him and close your eyes, the rhythm of the anvil, the roar of the forge, the howling of the wolves, and the gale of the wind made for a truly wondrous orchestra. You could even swear there was music playing softly somewhere, but that's probably just your exhausted brain making things up.
