Fey Forest Burning

The trees were becoming blurry, the crunch of needles and dying leaves becoming more apparent to my ears as the air grew thicker with a heavy quiet. It was as if I flew over the forest floor, racing against I don’t know what, but Alrik was in danger, I could feel it. The shadows were creeping closer, and whispers of power were gently grasping at me, like the flickering of warm flames licking at my skin. Please be okay.
I cleared the trees to the small opening we had our home in, and what greeted me stopped me dead in my tracks.
The limbs and roots of our tree were all sticking up out of the ground and pointed outwards, as if grown into spikes. I hadn’t noticed the lights of our home brightening through the trees before, but I definitely noticed the fire burning our garden to my right and left now, growing towards our tree with every second. It was so hot, standing thirty feet away it felt so intense and was so bright that it gave off almost white light. The ground around me looked as if someone had taken chunks out of the earth and then blackened and desecrated the ground, almost as if life was taken from the very dirt. Closer to the entrance to our tree home, the roots were tangled, as if trying to bar anyone from entering, although the roots didn’t seem to help, as they appeared to have been blasted open and splintered.
“No,” I whispered, my eyes focusing on the entrance. The air felt as if all moisture was sucked from it with the fire that was growing. I stepped forward and into the flames that was keeping me from the tree.
