Sometimes I wake up

Test atmosphere to accompany the following poem:

Sometimes I wake up when it's cold and windy outside.
The bare branches scratch at my window and a shadow is cast upon my bed.

I wonder what it would be like out in the cold; nowhere to go and knowing not a soul. To be a drifter wandering from place to place or a sea captain with no crew to navigate me through the vacant waters.

Sometimes my mind drifts to another place. Somewhere that only I know of.
It is peaceful here in my secret world... and I dream. I dream of years yet to come, and wonder to myself: where will I be and who will I know?

Sometimes I'm afraid. Afraid of the shadows on my blanket.
Sometimes not. I guess it really depends on me.

Sometimes my cat is purring softly beside me and I remind myself how safe
I feel. My cat doesn't know why I wake up in the middle of the night.
Neither do I, except that I think a lot. Maybe it's because it's so quiet.
Almost as if the walls are listening to my secretive thoughts.

There are times when I wake up and my room is so black,
I do not recognize it. When I was little I would think that I had been kidnapped while I was asleep. But that's silly, to think of that.

Sometimes I go for a walk all by myself in the middle of the night,
when the woods are alive with sound of crickets and the lake is so calm
it shines like a mirror.

I like to sit down on the edge of the dock
and dip my feet into the warm, silky water.
If I listen closely, I can almost hear my own heartbeat.

I love to wake up in the middle of the night
when I need some time to myself.
