The Green Chapel
Gawain arrives early at the appointed place, and passes a day and a night before the dormant figure of the Green Knight. Bees buzz, birds sing, the wind plays in the trees. A gentle brook bubbles at his feet. Darkness draws gradually over the hollow: the birds grow quieter, their silence filled by the croaks of frogs, while the moon plays silver over the thicket of green. And then the first light of morning fills the Chapel once again, stirs the songbirds awake in the creaking boughs. It is Christmas day.
